What Is a Female Hormone Blood Test?

A female hormone blood test measures key hormone levels that play a role in your menstrual cycle, fertility, mood, energy and overall wellbeing. It gives you a snapshot of your hormone levels at the time your sample is taken.

Book a private test with Swift Blood Tests and use your results to support a more informed conversation with your GP or specialist.

Why Consider a Female Hormone Blood Test?

People choose to check their hormone levels for many reasons. You might consider testing if you are experiencing:

  • Irregular, missed or changing periods
  • Symptoms you think may be linked to perimenopause, such as hot flushes or night sweats
  • Changes in mood, sleep or energy that you would like to look into
  • Skin changes, such as persistent acne or unwanted hair growth
  • Questions about your hormones while planning a pregnancy
  • A wish to understand your hormone levels or keep track of them over time

These symptoms can have many causes, and not all of them are hormonal. If you have severe, sudden or worrying symptoms, please speak to your GP or seek urgent medical advice.

What Can Female Hormone Testing Tell You?

A hormone test can show whether your levels sit inside or outside the usual reference ranges. On its own, it cannot tell you why.

What it can help with

  • Giving you objective information to discuss with a clinician
  • Highlighting results that may be worth following up
  • Providing a baseline to compare with future tests

What it cannot do alone

  • Diagnose conditions such as PCOS, menopause or infertility
  • Replace an assessment of your symptoms and medical history
  • Reflect how your hormones change across your whole cycle

Which Test Is Right for You?

This test is suited to a broader look at the hormones involved in your cycle and general hormonal health. It is not the same as every other women’s hormone test.

Female hormone blood test

Best suited if you want a broader look at your hormones, for example because of cycle changes or symptoms.

AMH test

A separate, focused test for people specifically interested in ovarian reserve. See the dedicated AMH blood test.

If you are specifically exploring menopause testing, view the separate menopause test, and read can blood tests detect perimenopause? to understand what testing can and cannot tell you.

If you are planning a pregnancy and want a test focused on that stage, see the fertility pre-conception blood test.

When Should You Take This Test, and How Do You Prepare?

The best time to test depends on which hormones are being measured. Some female hormones change significantly during the menstrual cycle, so the day and time of your sample can affect how your results are interpreted.

Please follow the preparation instructions provided for your test. Timing and preparation requirements can vary depending on the hormones being measured.

If you take hormonal contraception, HRT, or other medication, let the Swift Blood Tests team know before testing. Do not stop any prescribed medication unless advised by your healthcare professional.

Female Hormone Blood Test FAQs

What is a female hormone blood test?

It is a blood test that measures hormones linked to the menstrual cycle, fertility and general wellbeing, giving a snapshot of your levels on the day of testing.

Why might I have my hormone levels tested?

Common reasons include irregular, missed or changing periods, symptoms you think may be linked to perimenopause, changes in mood, sleep or energy, persistent acne or unwanted hair growth, planning a pregnancy, or wanting a baseline to compare with in future.

Can a blood test diagnose a hormone imbalance, PCOS or menopause?

A blood test can show whether hormone levels fall outside reference ranges, but a diagnosis needs a clinician to consider your results alongside your symptoms and medical history. This test does not diagnose PCOS, menopause or infertility on its own.

When should female hormones be tested?

It depends on the hormones being measured, as some vary through the cycle, so the day and time of your sample can affect how your results are interpreted. Follow the preparation instructions provided when you book.

Do I need to fast or prepare in a particular way?

Please follow the preparation instructions provided for your test. Timing and preparation requirements can vary depending on the hormones being measured.

Can I take this test if I use hormonal contraception or HRT?

If you take hormonal contraception, HRT or other medication, let the Swift Blood Tests team know before testing, as these can suppress or alter hormone levels and may make some results harder to interpret. The team can advise whether any timing adjustment is needed. Do not stop any prescribed medication unless advised by your healthcare professional.

Can I take a female hormone test at home?

You can choose a clinic visit, a home visit (Essex only) or a kit for venous blood collection using the booking options at the top of this page. If you choose the kit option, follow the booking/kit instructions to arrange your venous sample — do not assume it is a finger-prick self-collection kit. If you prefer to visit in person, you can find your nearest clinic.

What can this test tell me about fertility or planning a pregnancy?

It can give you a snapshot of hormone levels linked to your cycle to discuss with a clinician, but it cannot diagnose infertility on its own. If you are planning a pregnancy and want a test focused on that stage, see the fertility pre-conception blood test.

Can this test tell me if I am menopausal or perimenopausal?

No — on its own it cannot diagnose menopause or perimenopause. For people aged 45 or over, menopause and perimenopause are usually diagnosed from symptoms and history without confirmatory laboratory tests; if you are younger, or early menopause is suspected, a clinician may consider additional testing. If you are specifically exploring menopause testing, view the separate menopause test, and read can blood tests detect perimenopause?

Is an AMH blood test the same as a female hormone blood test?

No. AMH testing focuses on ovarian reserve and is a separate test. A female hormone blood test looks more broadly at hormones involved in your cycle. See the dedicated AMH blood test.

Can I get a female hormone test on the NHS, or should I book privately?

This page is for booking a private test with Swift Blood Tests. Your GP can advise you on NHS testing and whether it is appropriate for your symptoms and history.

How do I book, and where can I have my sample taken?

Select Clinic Visit, Home Visit (Essex only) or Kit Only (Venous Blood Collection) in the booking box at the top of this page, and check your basket total before completing your booking.

How will I receive my results?

Your sample is sent for laboratory analysis and your results will be provided to you once testing is complete, so you can review them and discuss anything unexpected with your GP or specialist if needed.

Great service. I’m not the best with needles, however, Jo made me feel comfortable and at ease which made the whole process much more tolerable. 5 stars from me.
