What Is a Thyroid Blood Test?

A thyroid blood test measures hormones involved in how your thyroid works. Your thyroid is a small gland in your neck, and the hormones it makes help control how your body uses energy.

Our Thyroid Function Blood Test measures three markers: TSH, Free T4 and Free T3. It is a straightforward thyroid function test you can book privately, without waiting for an appointment, and it gives you a snapshot of your levels on the day your sample is taken. Many people book a private thyroid blood test so they have clear results to discuss with their GP or another healthcare professional.

Who Might Consider a Thyroid Blood Test?

People often book a thyroid test when they notice changes like these:

  • Persistent tiredness or low energy
  • Unexplained changes in weight
  • Feeling unusually cold or hot
  • Changes in mood
  • Difficulty concentrating or brain fog
  • Hair or skin changes
  • Changes in heart rate
  • Changes in sleep

These symptoms are common and can have many causes. Having them does not mean you have a thyroid condition. If your symptoms are new, getting worse or worrying you, speak to your GP.

If tiredness is your main concern and you would like a wider set of checks, take a look at our Tired All The Time Blood Test.

What This Test Can and Cannot Tell You

We want you to know exactly what you’re booking. Thyroid conditions are diagnosed by a doctor who looks at your symptoms, history and blood results together.

What it can tell you

  • Your TSH, Free T4 and Free T3 levels
  • A snapshot of these thyroid markers at the time your sample is taken
  • Information you can discuss with your GP or another healthcare professional

What it cannot tell you

  • It cannot diagnose every thyroid condition on its own
  • It does not replace an assessment by a doctor
  • It does not give treatment or medication recommendations
  • It does not test for thyroid antibodies

What’s Included in the Thyroid Function Blood Test?

This test includes three biomarkers.

TSH

Thyroid-stimulating hormone

Made by the pituitary gland in your brain. TSH tells your thyroid how much hormone to produce, and it is commonly the first marker looked at when checking thyroid function.

Free T4

Free thyroxine

The main hormone your thyroid releases. “Free” means the part that is not bound to proteins in your blood and is available for your body to use.

Free T3

Free triiodothyronine

The more active form of thyroid hormone. Much of it is made from T4 in the body’s tissues. Measuring it alongside TSH and Free T4 adds context to your results.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a thyroid blood test check?

This thyroid blood test checks three markers in your blood: TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone), Free T4 and Free T3. Together they give a snapshot of how your thyroid was working on the day your sample was taken.

What biomarkers are included in this thyroid test?

Three biomarkers: TSH, Free T4 and Free T3. Thyroid antibodies are not included in this test.

What is TSH?

TSH stands for thyroid-stimulating hormone. It is made by the pituitary gland in your brain and tells your thyroid how much hormone to produce. TSH is commonly the first marker looked at when checking thyroid function.

What is the difference between TSH and Free T4?

TSH is the signal from your pituitary gland that tells your thyroid to work. Free T4 is the main hormone your thyroid releases in response. Looking at both together gives more context than either result on its own.

Can a thyroid blood test diagnose an underactive thyroid?

Not on its own. An underactive thyroid is diagnosed by a doctor who considers your symptoms, history and blood test results together. This test gives you TSH, Free T4 and Free T3 results that you can discuss with your GP or another healthcare professional.

Can a thyroid blood test detect an overactive thyroid?

It measures markers that doctors look at when assessing an overactive thyroid, but blood results need to be considered with your symptoms and clinical context. A single result cannot confirm or rule out a thyroid condition on its own.

Do I need to fast for a thyroid blood test?

Please follow the preparation instructions supplied for your test and Visit Type. If you’re unsure whether you need to fast, call our team on 01277 652067 before your appointment.

Can medication affect thyroid blood test results?

Some medicines can affect thyroid blood test results. Do not stop or change any prescribed medication to have this test. Let our team know what you take, and speak to your prescriber or healthcare professional if you are unsure whether your medication may affect testing.

Can biotin affect thyroid blood tests?

Biotin and some other supplements can sometimes interfere with laboratory testing, including thyroid tests. Tell our team about any supplements you take. Any preparation or pause should follow the instructions for your test, or the advice of your prescriber or healthcare professional.

How quickly will my thyroid blood test results be ready?

Next working day, depending on sample timing.

What is the difference between a thyroid function test and a thyroid antibody test?

A thyroid function test, like this one, measures TSH, Free T4 and Free T3 to show how your thyroid is working. A thyroid antibody test uses additional biomarkers to look for antibodies that can be linked to autoimmune thyroid conditions. Antibodies are not included in this test.

How much is a private thyroid blood test and where can I get one near me?

Great service. I’m not the best with needles, however, Jo made me feel comfortable and at ease which made the whole process much more tolerable. 5 stars from me.
