3 biomarkers

The menopause/HRT panel measures oestrogen (oestradiol) for symptom relief and health, progesterone for uterine protection, and FSH to assess ovarian function in women. These help evaluate menopausal status and HRT effectiveness.

Sample collection: A small blood sample is taken (usually serum tube) by a finger-prick kit at home or in one of our UK clinics. Our kit includes everything needed; simply return the sample in the pre-paid envelope. Results include a personalised doctor’s interpretation.

What Is a Menopause and HRT Blood Test?

This private blood test measures three hormones that change around menopause: oestradiol, progesterone and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). It gives you a snapshot of these levels on the day of your sample, which you can discuss with your GP or specialist alongside your symptoms.

Perimenopause is the transition before menopause, when periods become irregular and hormone levels fluctuate. Menopause is when periods have stopped altogether, usually defined as 12 months without a period when you are not using hormonal contraception.

What This Test Measures

Oestrogen (oestradiol)

Oestradiol is the main oestrogen involved in menopause symptoms. Levels generally fall around menopause, but a single result cannot confirm menopause on its own.

Progesterone

Progesterone works alongside oestrogen and is relevant to HRT balance and ovulation.

Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH)

FSH tends to rise as ovarian function declines. Because FSH fluctuates during perimenopause, one result has limited value on its own and must be interpreted with your age, symptoms and history.

What This Test Can and Cannot Tell You

What it can help with

  • Showing whether these hormone levels sit inside or outside the usual reference ranges
  • Giving you objective information to discuss with a clinician
  • Providing a baseline for future comparison

What it cannot do alone

  • Diagnose or rule out menopause or perimenopause. For people aged 45 or over, menopause and perimenopause are usually assessed from symptoms and history without laboratory tests
  • Determine the correct HRT type or dose. HRT decisions are usually guided by symptom control and review with your prescriber
  • Replace an assessment of your symptoms, medical history and medication

Who May Consider This Test?

  • Have symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, irregular periods or mood changes and want hormone information to discuss with a clinician
  • Are taking HRT and want hormone information to discuss with your prescriber
  • Are under 45 with symptoms and have been advised that blood testing may help
  • Want a baseline to compare with a future test

FAQs

Menopause and HRT Blood Test FAQs

What is a menopause blood test?

It is a blood test measuring hormones that change around menopause. This test measures oestradiol, progesterone and FSH, giving a snapshot of your levels on the day of testing.

Not on its own. Hormone levels fluctuate during perimenopause, and for people aged 45 or over menopause and perimenopause are usually assessed from symptoms and history. A clinician interprets any results alongside your symptoms.

Perimenopause is the transition before menopause, when periods become irregular. Menopause is when periods have stopped, usually defined as 12 months without a period when you are not using hormonal contraception.

Blood testing is more likely to be considered for people aged 40 to 45 with symptoms, or under 40 where early menopause is suspected. If you are under 40, do not rely on a single result — speak to your GP, as further testing is usually needed.

It provides oestradiol, progesterone and FSH levels to discuss with your prescriber. It does not determine the correct HRT type or dose, which is usually guided by symptom control and clinical review.

No special preparation is usually needed, and you can eat and drink normally unless instructed otherwise. Follow the preparation instructions provided for your test, and tell the team about HRT, contraception or other medication beforehand. Do not stop prescribed medication unless advised.

You can choose a clinic visit, a home visit (Essex only) or a kit for venous blood collection using the booking options at the top of this page. If you choose the kit option, follow the booking instructions to arrange your venous sample.

This page is for booking a private test with Swift Blood Tests. Your GP can advise whether NHS assessment or testing is appropriate for your symptoms and history.

Your sample is sent for laboratory analysis and a doctor’s report is included. You can then review your results and discuss anything unexpected with your GP or specialist if needed.

A result outside the reference range does not by itself diagnose a condition. Discuss it with your GP or specialist, who will consider your symptoms, age, medication and history, and whether further testing is needed.

Check the Private Menopause Test Price Before You Order

The current price of this private menopause and HRT blood test is displayed at the top of this page. Please check that displayed price and then confirm your final basket total before completing your order, as your total may depend on the collection option you choose. Do not assume that every collection option is included in the same total — review your basket carefully so you know exactly what you are paying for your menopause blood test before you pay. If anything in your basket looks unclear, or you want to confirm the total cost of your private perimenopause test before ordering, contact Swift Blood Tests on 01277652067 or by email at enquiries@swiftbloodtests.co.uk and the team will guide you.

Book a Private Perimenopause Test or an HRT Blood Test

This panel is also suitable if you are looking to book a private perimenopause test or a private HRT blood test. Perimenopause is the transition before menopause, when periods become irregular and hormone levels fluctuate, and the same three hormones — oestradiol, progesterone and FSH — are relevant whether you are exploring perimenopause symptoms, are already taking HRT, or want a baseline to compare with a future test. Before you book, please bear in mind that for people aged 45 or over, menopause and perimenopause are usually assessed from symptoms and history without laboratory tests, and a single result cannot confirm or rule out menopause or perimenopause for everyone. If you are unsure whether to order this private menopause test, speak to your GP or specialist first, or call the team on 01277652067. If you take HRT, hormonal contraception or other medication, tell the team before testing, as hormonal treatments can affect hormone levels and how results are interpreted. Results are for discussion with your prescriber and do not by themselves set the correct HRT type or dose. Do not stop any prescribed medication unless your healthcare professional advises you to.

Compare Tests Before You Buy

If you want a broader look at the hormones involved in your cycle before you book, you may prefer our female hormone blood test. If you are specifically interested in ovarian reserve, the AMH blood test is a separate test focused on ovarian reserve. If you are planning a pregnancy, see our fertility pre-conception blood test, and to understand what testing can and cannot tell you at this stage of life, read can blood tests detect perimenopause? Comparing the right test first helps you book with confidence and avoids ordering a menopause blood test when a different panel would suit you better.

Great service. I’m not the best with needles, however, Jo made me feel comfortable and at ease which made the whole process much more tolerable. 5 stars from me.
