No NHS Blood Test Slot? Use Your GP Form Privately in Essex

If your GP or hospital team has given you a blood test form but you can’t find a convenient NHS appointment, you may be able to have your blood taken privately instead. Swift Blood Tests offers a private blood test with your GP form in Essex: a phlebotomist takes the sample at our Basildon clinic or at your home, then takes it to the laboratory named on your form, usually the same day. Your results go back to the doctor who asked for the test, just as they would after an NHS appointment.

Please note that Swift Blood Tests is a separate, private company. We are not part of the NHS or of Swiftqueue, the online system many Essex NHS services use to book blood test appointments. The two names are similar, but the organisations are not connected.

Already have your form and know you want a private blood draw? Check GP form eligibility and book a blood draw, or call 01277 652067. You can also send a photo of your form on WhatsApp to 07308 136364.

Can’t Get an NHS Blood Test Appointment? Check These First

Paying privately is one option, but it isn’t always the right one. Before you book, take a minute to check the following.

Is your blood test urgent?

If your form is marked urgent, or your GP has said the test needs to be done quickly, contact your GP surgery or the team that requested it. They can arrange urgent NHS appointments. Don’t wait for a private booking if your test is urgent. If you feel unwell, contact your GP, use NHS 111, or call 999 in an emergency.

Free NHS options in south Essex

Around Basildon, Billericay and Brentwood, NHS blood tests for GP forms are run by Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust. Appointments must be booked in advance, through Swiftqueue or by calling 01702 746065, at sites such as Basildon Hospital, St Andrew’s Centre in Billericay and Brentwood Community Hospital. The trust’s blood test booking page explains how this works.

In Thurrock, the NHS community phlebotomy service is run by NELFT. It offers booked appointments and limited walk-in slots: weekday mornings at the Community Diagnostic Centre at Thurrock Community Hospital in Grays, and Thursdays at Corringham Integrated Wellbeing Medical Centre. NELFT clinics see patients aged over 16. You can find the latest details on NELFT’s South West Essex phlebotomy page.

New NHS slots and cancellations do appear, so checking again over a few days can help. If the next suitable slot still doesn’t fit your work, childcare or health needs, a private blood draw is an alternative.

Can You Use an NHS GP Blood Test Form Privately?

Often, yes. Your blood test form is a request from your GP or consultant asking a laboratory to run specific tests. A qualified phlebotomist outside the NHS can take the sample, but the laboratory on the form decides how samples must be labelled, packed and delivered. Swift Blood Tests follows the labelling and transport requirements of the laboratory named on your form.

What you are paying for

With a GP form, you are paying for the appointment, the blood draw and getting your sample to the laboratory. You are not buying a private blood test. The tests are the ones your doctor requested, the laboratory on your form analyses the sample, and your doctor receives and explains the results.

If you don’t have a form and want to choose your own tests, that’s a different service. Our guide on NHS and private blood testing options explains the difference.

Forms and tests that may not suit a private blood draw

Not every test can be collected away from a hospital. Check with us before booking if your form includes:

  • a test that your GP or the form says must be taken at a hospital clinic, often because the sample has to reach the laboratory very quickly
  • a glucose tolerance test (GTT), which involves several samples over a few hours
  • timing instructions, such as a sample taken at a set time of day or a set number of hours after a medicine
  • a request marked urgent (see above)

If you’re not sure, contact Swift Blood Tests about your GP form before you book, or send a photo of your form on WhatsApp to 07308 136364, and we’ll tell you whether a private draw is suitable.

How Much Does a Private Blood Draw With a GP Form Cost?

At the time of writing, Swift Blood Tests advertises the GP form blood draw at £40 per appointment:

  • £40 for a home visit in Essex or a clinic appointment
  • several samples or tubes taken at the same visit are charged as one appointment
  • a travel surcharge may apply if you live outside our standard home-visit area
  • no fee is charged if a sample can’t be collected

Enter your postcode when you book a home visit so that you can see your options and check the total before you pay.

How to Book Your GP Form Blood Draw With Swift Blood Tests

  1. Check your form. Make sure you have the form from your GP or hospital and look for any instructions about fasting, timing or where the sample must be taken.
  2. Choose a clinic appointment or home visit. On the phlebotomy booking page, choose a clinic visit or a home visit (Essex only), enter your postcode for a home visit, and pick an appointment time.
  3. Prepare for the appointment. Follow the instructions from your GP or hospital team. If you’ve been asked to fast, Mid and South Essex NHS advises having nothing but plain water for 10 hours beforehand, unless your clinician says otherwise. Don’t stop any medicine unless your GP or clinician has told you to. We’ll also confirm any fasting instructions when you book.
  4. Have your blood taken. Have your form ready. The appointment usually takes 10 to 15 minutes, and the blood draw itself only a few minutes. Your phlebotomist is DBS-checked, uses single-use equipment and labels every tube in front of you.
  5. We deliver the sample. We label and pack your sample and send it to the laboratory named on your form, usually the same day and within 24 hours.
  6. Your doctor receives the results. The laboratory reports the results to the GP or hospital team who requested the test. Contact them for your results and for advice on what they mean.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my GP blood test form privately instead of booking on Swiftqueue?

Yes, for most routine tests. You book an appointment with Swift Blood Tests rather than through Swiftqueue, and bring the form your GP or hospital gave you. We take the sample and send it to the laboratory on your form. If your form is urgent or includes a specialised test, check with us or your GP first.

How much does a private blood draw with a GP form cost?

The advertised price is £40 for a clinic appointment or a home visit in Essex, and several samples at one visit are charged at that single rate. A travel surcharge may apply outside our standard area. You’ll see the total when you book.

Will my results go back to my GP?

Yes. The laboratory on your form reports the results to the GP or hospital team who requested the test. Swift Blood Tests doesn’t send you these results. Your surgery or hospital team will explain them, and you may also be able to see them in the NHS App. NHS results can take from a few days to a few weeks.

Do I have to take the sample to the hospital myself?

No. We label and pack your sample and take it to the laboratory named on your form, usually the same day.

Can you take blood at home in Basildon, Billericay or Thurrock?

Yes. We offer home visits across Essex, including Basildon, Billericay, Brentwood and Thurrock. Enter your postcode when booking to check that we cover your address.

What happens if you can’t take my blood?

Our phlebotomists are experienced with difficult veins. If a sample can’t be collected, you won’t be charged.

Is Swift Blood Tests part of the NHS or Swiftqueue?

No. Swift Blood Tests is an independent private provider. We are not part of the NHS or Swiftqueue and are not endorsed by either.

My form says urgent. Should I book privately?

No. Contact your GP surgery or the team that requested the test, as they can arrange urgent NHS appointments. Don’t wait for a private booking if your test is urgent.
