For a first annual men’s health check, the Men’s Health MOT (£155) is the sensible starting point. The Ultimate Men’s Health blood test (£175) is worth the extra £20 if it covers markers you specifically want checked. The best way to decide is to compare the marker lists on each product page with the questions you want answered.
Why men book a men’s health check
Many health problems that affect men develop quietly for years. Raised cholesterol, rising blood sugar and early changes in liver or kidney function often cause no symptoms at first. A blood test can pick up these changes early, when lifestyle changes are most likely to help.
Men often book a check-up:
- around a milestone birthday, such as 40 or 50;
- when there’s a family history of heart disease or diabetes;
- after a period of weight gain, heavy drinking or poor sleep;
- when they’ve started training and want a baseline;
- simply because they haven’t seen a GP in years.
Side by side
| Men’s Health MOT | Ultimate Men’s Health | |
| Price | £155 | £175 |
| Full blood count | Yes | Yes |
| Approach | A core set of general health markers | A wider panel in one blood draw |
| Best for | A yearly baseline to share with your GP | Men with specific concerns who want more covered |
Both tests are taken as a single venous blood sample, so you only need one appointment. Check each product page for the full marker list before you book.
Add-ons that change the decision
Some tests sit outside a general health check and need extra thought:
- PSA (prostate-specific antigen). PSA isn’t a routine screening test in the UK because it can produce false alarms. If you’re 50 or over, or 45 or over and Black or with a family history of prostate cancer, read our guide on how to book a private PSA blood test before adding it. The PSA blood test costs £50 on its own.
- Testosterone. This needs a morning sample, ideally between 7am and 10am. If you want testosterone checked, book an early slot or add the testosterone blood test.
- Fasting. Some markers, such as cholesterol and glucose, may need a fast. Follow the instructions you’re given when you book.
Who each test suits
- Men’s Health MOT: men without specific symptoms who want a yearly baseline to share with their GP.
- Ultimate Men’s Health: men with lifestyle concerns such as low energy, training goals or weight, who want more covered in one appointment.
- Neither: men with specific symptoms such as chest pain, breathlessness, urinary changes or unexplained weight loss. These need a GP appointment, not a health check.
Our men’s health blood test guide explains what each marker means. This page is about choosing which test to buy.
Making the most of your results
A health check is most useful when you act on it:
- Keep a copy of your results so you can compare them each year.
- Share anything outside the normal range with your GP.
- Repeat the same test at a similar time of day each year to keep results comparable.
- Use the results to set one or two realistic goals, such as cutting alcohol or adding regular exercise, then retest to see what changed.
Clinic or home collection
Swift takes venous samples at clinics in Billericay, Basildon, Thurrock, Maldon, Brentwood, Chelmsford, Bromley and Sunbury, or at home across Essex, Bromley and Surrey. A morning appointment covers testosterone timing and any fasting in one visit. Use the clinic finder to choose a location.
Preparing for your appointment
- Book a morning slot if testosterone is included or you’re adding it.
- Check whether you need to fast, and if so have only water beforehand.
- Drink plenty of water, which makes the blood draw easier.
- Avoid heavy drinking and very hard exercise the day before, as both can affect some results.
- Bring a list of any medicines and supplements you take.
