Overview

The CEA (Carcinoembryonic Antigen) test is a blood test that measures the level of a protein called carcinoembryonic antigen in the blood. CEA is a tumor marker—a substance that may be elevated in people with certain types of cancer, particularly colorectal cancer. While CEA is primarily produced during fetal development, it normally exists at very low levels in healthy adults.

Important Considerations:

  • CEA is not recommended as a screening test for cancer in people without symptoms or known cancer diagnosis
  • Elevated CEA levels can occur in non-cancerous conditions: inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis), liver disease (cirrhosis, hepatitis), pancreatitis, lung disease, and smoking
