A blood test is more sensitive than a home urine test, which means it can detect lower levels of hCG and confirm pregnancy earlier. The result is analysed in a laboratory rather than read by eye. Any test, blood or urine, can still be negative if taken too early.
Because it detects lower levels of hCG, a blood test can pick up pregnancy earlier than many home urine tests, even before a missed period. If you test very early and the result is negative, hCG may not yet be high enough to detect, so testing again a few days later can help.
You don’t usually need to fast for an hCG blood test. If you are booking other tests at the same time, check whether any of them need fasting.

If you tested early, hCG may not have risen enough to detect yet. If your period still doesn’t arrive, test again a few days later or speak to your GP. If you have pain or bleeding, get medical advice straight away.
Not on its own. A pregnancy blood test detects hCG, but it can’t show where a pregnancy is or confirm that it is progressing healthily. A scan and assessment by a clinician are needed for that.
