Overview

The Pancreatic Health Blood Test provides essential insights into the levels of key digestive enzymes produced by the pancreas to help diagnose and monitor conditions affecting pancreatic function. The pancreas plays a vital role in digestion by producing enzymes like amylase and lipase, which break down carbohydrates and fats. Abnormal levels of these enzymes in the blood can indicate issues such as pancreatitis—inflammation of the pancreas—which can be acute (sudden) or chronic (long-term). This test is particularly useful for identifying pancreatic disorders that may cause significant abdominal pain and digestive problems, typically evaluated in individuals experiencing related symptoms.

Key Test Components

Lipase

Lipase is a digestive enzyme primarily produced by the pancreas that helps break down fats into fatty acids and glycerol for absorption in the small intestine. Smaller amounts are also produced in the salivary glands and stomach. Elevated lipase levels in the blood often indicate pancreatic inflammation or damage, as the enzyme leaks into the bloodstream when the pancreas is injured. Lipase is considered more specific than amylase for diagnosing pancreatitis, especially in cases related to alcohol use, and levels more than three times the normal range strongly suggest acute pancreatitis.

Amylase is an enzyme produced mainly by the pancreas and salivary glands that aids in the digestion of carbohydrates by breaking down starches into simple sugars. When the pancreas is damaged or inflamed, amylase is released into the blood at higher levels. While useful for detecting pancreatic issues, elevated amylase can also result from non-pancreatic conditions like salivary gland problems or kidney dysfunction, making it less specific than lipase for pancreatic diagnosis.
