Overview

The Clotting Blood Test is a specialized laboratory panel designed to evaluate the blood’s ability to clot appropriately. This comprehensive coagulation assessment measures key factors involved in the blood clotting cascade, including intrinsic, extrinsic, and final common pathways. The test identifies bleeding disorders, thrombotic risks, monitoring anticoagulation therapy, and evaluating patients presenting with unexplained bleeding or clotting complications.

Key Test Components

PT/INR, APTT

Measures the extrinsic coagulation pathway by evaluating the time required for blood to clot after tissue factor is added. Assesses factors I, II, V, VII, and X.

A standardized measurement derived from PT results, used primarily for monitoring anticoagulation therapy with warfarin.

Evaluates the intrinsic and final common coagulation pathways by measuring time required for blood to clot after activating factor XII.

Measures the concentration of fibrinogen (clotting factor I), essential for the final step of coagulation. Fibrinogen is converted to fibrin to form stable blood clots.
